The new term has started, and we’ve spent the holidays arranging something quite special.

From October, Greenwich Music School will be opening a new programme of Saturday courses at Thomas Tallis School, in Kidbrooke. Alongside the chance to use the excellent facilities, the new location will allow us to open up our curriculum to be broader than ever.

We will be developing a new hub for the musical community in Greenwich and beyond, with unique classes that you can’t find anywhere else. And like our other classes, they will focus on self-expression and creativity, so that children and young people will gain confidence and musicianship in a more modern environment. This approach, based on quality tuition from experienced professionals, is at the core of what we do at Greenwich Music School.

To complement our existing curriculum, these new classes will have more of a focus on different genres and skills. Whether you’re interested in jazz or rock, in songwriting, production, or performance, there’s something for you. We’ve held similar classes in the holidays to great success – in particular, students liked the practical sessions and writing lyrics. Now we’ll be able to offer the opportunity for students to progress and develop their skills and knowledge through consistent weekly classes.

There are not many opportunities for young people to play in a band, to practise and develop together, and to write music together. There are even fewer that can offer the level of teaching and support that comes from the GMS framework.‍

This new Saturday music programme has been developed with, and will be taught by, a team of professional musicians, led by Simon Maddison, also known as Silent Cities, a BBC 6 Music playlisted singer and songwriter. It will be suitable for a variety of abilities, from absolute beginners, through to experienced students looking to develop specific aspects of their musicianship. And it will be able to provide support for GCSE, A level and BTEC courses, and for ABRSM theory exams, as the curriculum will revolve around student-led projects, with plenty of room to express yourself.

Alongside the new programme of group classes, we’re also able to offer an expanded selection of one-to-one lessons—from old favourites, like the piano and violin, to the bass guitar and the drums. There will also be new music theory groups for children and young people to take part in.
