Instrument Starters
Take your first steps in learning a specific instrument - like clarinet, guitar, piano or violin - in fun, small-group classes that build essential technique, music-reading and performance skills.
More about the course
Instrument Starters is our foundation-level group course for children starting an instrument for the first time. You can join at any point in the year, and we recommend staying for approximately a year to build strong musical foundations. In small, supportive groups, children learn the basics of playing an instrument, develop essential musical skills, and grow in confidence as part of a shared learning journey.
What to expect
- Small groups of three – plenty of individual attention plus the fun of making music together
- Engaging group learning – children build confidence and motivation as they learn from each other, play together as an ensemble, and hear what’s possible a few steps ahead. Teachers tailor tasks so that each child is appropriately challenged and supported.
- Instruments provided for the first few lessons – no need to buy or hire straight away
- Step-by-step progression – home practice is gently introduced, with clear weekly tasks from your teacher
- All-round musicianship – early technique, music-reading, creative activities and ensemble skills
- Regular performance opportunities – relaxed half-termly Launchpad concerts help children share their music with family and friends
- Mixed level learning - where space allows, children may join during the year - so the group of three may include children at different levels. Our experienced teachers adapt activities to engage children at different stages, with peer learning often accelerating progress for all group members.
Why choose Instrument Starters?
- A positive weekly highlight that builds musical confidence and enjoyment
- Expert teachers who specialise in each instrument and keep lessons engaging
- A smooth pathway into longer-term lessons or continued study within the same group
By the end of the course, most children have a solid foundation in technique and musicianship, a regular practice routine, and the confidence to continue learning and performing. Many will be working towards the level of the ABRSM Copper Music Medal by the end of the year – an accredited certificate designed for beginners.
Suitable for complete beginners, or for children moving on from Voyagers or Music Club.
Taught by a specialist in the instrument, from our team of outstanding teachers.

- Hire instruments: we recommend Saunders Music for reasonably priced hire of an instrument - they have good quality flutes, violins, saxophones or guitars.
- Violins: for Violin Starters, we will advise what size to get in the first lesson so please wait until then to order an instrument!
- Pianos: read our blog about keyboard and piano instrument options.
Please note this course is not suitable for those already taking one to one lessons.
